The successful applicant will be Breast Radiologist. This post forms part of a sustained development in breast imaging to meet rising demand. The successful candidate will join a cohesive breast imaging team in a dedicated breast unit for symptomatic and screening services.

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust is the main provider of acute and specialist care services in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It serves a population of around 430,000 people, a figure that can increase significantly with visitors during the busiest times of the year.

If a newly appointed consultant, the successful applicant will be eligible to apply for additional study leave to undertake up to three months additional subspecialty radiology training to meet specific learning objectives that are of benefit to the applicant and the Clinical Imaging Directorate at RCHT. This additional study leave must be taken within two years of appointment. There may be a requirement to participate the on call rota during this period of additional study leave.

The successful candidate will join a team of 33 Consultants providing a wide range of general and specialist radiology services and will be expected to contribute to the second on 1:11 general radiology on call service. First on call is provided by Peninsula Radiology On Call, a network Registrar delivered service.

RCHT is a large training centre for the Peninsula Postgraduate School of Radiology. A number of Specialty Registrars rotate through the department at any one time (17 in 2024/5).

Radiology services are based at The Royal Cornwall Hospital. The department however will support Consultants working general radiology sessions at community sites if appropriate. Home workstations are available for consultant radiologists to facilitate more flexible working.

For most consultants on a standard full time contract job plans include one day a week for flexible SPA/off work (subject to job planning).

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust works in partnership with other healthcare providers to deliver high quality healthcare services across the county. The Trust has close links to medical specialist services in the Southwest Peninsula and beyond. Serving a widespread local population, as well as thousands of visitors to Cornwall each year, poses a number of unique healthcare challenges. The Trust provides acute medical and surgical services to a population of around 430,000, which more than doubles during the busy holiday periods, from our three hospitals: The Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro, West Cornwall Hospital, Penzance and St Michaels in Hayle. Outpatient and other services are also provided at a large number of community-based NHS locations around the county and a number of corporate support services are located away from the main hospital sites.

A new imaging and oncology centre, including two new MRI scanners with space for a third, opened in 2023. The Trust is also planning a new Women and Children's Hospital.

There are Community Diagnostic Centres run by the Trust in Bodmin and Penzance.
