Registrar in General Surgery (Colorectal Interest Desirable)

12-month Fixed Term Post | ST5+ or Equivalent

Are you a motivated and capable General Surgery registrar looking to develop your skills in a high-performing tertiary centre? UCLH is seeking an ST5-level (or equivalent) surgeon to join our Gastrointestinal Services Division for a 12-month Registrar position. An interest in colorectal surgery is welcomed but not essential. This role offers broad exposure to complex GI and colorectal pathology within a supportive, academically active environment, alongside full participation in service delivery and training.

Why Join UCLH?

Based within the Surgery and Cancer Board, UCLH's Gastrointestinal Services Division is a nationally recognised centre of excellence, bringing together GI Surgery, GI Medicine, and Endoscopy. As a high-volume tertiary referral centre, we manage a wide spectrum of complex colorectal and IBD cases, supported by robust multidisciplinary working, strong clinical governance, and an established research culture. The successful candidate will gain valuable experience in advanced colorectal surgery, peri-operative decision-making, and multidisciplinary care, while working alongside leading clinicians in the field.

Who Are We Looking For?

We welcome applications from candidates at ST5 level or above, or those with equivalent experience, in General Surgery. You must hold (or be eligible for) full GMC registration at the start of the post.

Essential attributes include:

  1. Experience in General Surgery, with or without a defined colorectal subspecialty interest
  2. Good operative and peri-operative decision-making skills
  3. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
  4. Commitment to training, service delivery, and professional development

Desirable attributes:

  1. An interest in colorectal surgery
  2. Experience in minimally invasive surgery
  3. Academic or research interest (not essential)

The post holder will participate in a 1 in 9 on-call rota, contributing fully to the General Surgery service.
